Meet WellSpan Health’s Ob/Gyn education team

WellSpan Health has made the commitment to residency education because it wants well-trained physicians as part of its communities and organization.

Every service is capable of functioning safely without residents, which is why we can offer protected educational time every week, in addition to several full day educational and community-building experiences throughout the year.

Our residents work hard, but our resident surveys confirm that they recognize we’re prioritizing education over service.

Faculty and leadership who make education their highest priority

The Ob/Gyn residency program is organized by the program director, Dr. Paul Burcher; the associate program director, Dr. Kathryn Hosey; and the assistant program director, Dr. Kevin Wolverton.

The teaching staff consists of six MFMs, one reproductive endocrinologist, three gynecologic oncologists, eight robotic surgeons, a laborist group, five clinic preceptors, four urogynecologists and a fellowship-trained adolescent/pediatric gynecologist.

In addition, the residency program has 15 highly trained and dedicated clinical teaching faculty, six midwives and two CRNPs.

I have been the Program Director for WellSpan York Hospital for seven years. It has been a great joy to watch the residency grow and flourish during this time, and the relationship the residents have with each other and faculty is certainly our greatest strength.

Prior to coming to York, I was the Clerkship Director and then Residency Director at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York. I have also worked in academic settings in Eugene, Oregon and Olean, New York.

In addition to directing the residency program, I am also the chair of the system-wide bioethics consultation service and committee for WellSpan. I have a PhD in philosophy with a concentration in ethics and subsequently completed a clinical ethics fellowship from University of Chicago. Each year, I co-direct a conference on reproductive ethics, with our residents presenting their ethics research.

My research interests are informed consent, cesarean birth on maternal request and alternative birthing options. I enjoy mentoring resident research projects and assisting them in their presentations and resident publications. I currently have 28 peer-reviewed publications on these topics, two edited books and five book chapters.

Clinically, my interests are operative vaginal delivery intrapartum management of high-risk patients, and I work as a laborist and a preceptor for the resident outpatient office.

Kathryn Hosey

I grew up moving around. I have spent time in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, and now Pennsylvania (listed alphabetically, not chronologically). I moved to York to attend residency at WellSpan York Hospital. My undergraduate degree is in sports medicine which currently translates into an interest in lifestyle medicine - how our nutrition, movement, stress management, and rest contribute to health optimization and disease prevention. I also have clinical interests in high-risk obstetrics and transgender health. I have a passion for advocacy as well and have recently completed a term as the board president of the York County Medical Society.

When I am not at work, I can be found entertaining (and being entertained) by my two young children, hiking, kayaking, and traveling. We hope to visit all the national parks before our boys go to college. I also volunteer with the local chapter of Girls on the Run and have completed one sprint triathlon with plans to do more in the future.

Born in Billings, MT. Was in private practice for 15 years (10 in York) before becoming residency faculty.

Dr. Burke has worked in Ob/Gyn for 19 years. She transitioned to an office job here at WellSpan in 2017, taking care of patients and teaching residents at our outpatient clinic. Prior to this, Dr. Burke worked in the office, labor and delivery, and the operating room.

As a physician, she enjoys continually teaching and educating patients, residents and students.

Interests and hobbies: attending multiple sporting events with her kids, running, gardening, cooking and reading.

My interest in medicine began in elementary school, and I worked toward my goal of becoming a physician during college. Volunteering in the women's student health clinic on campus made it clear to me that obstetrics and gynecology would be my chosen field. Ob/gyn allows me to educate patients about their reproductive health and offer many new therapies to improve their lives.

I enjoy teaching the next generation of Ob/gyn physicians. I know that our patients benefit from the attentiveness of passionate, young physicians who collaborate with experienced older physicians for guidance.

Hobbies: watching movies, attending live theater performances, reading, going on road trips, trying new restaurants and trying to stay motivated to keep swimming for exercise

I was always interested in science, and I studied Biochemistry at Penn State with the plan to become a research scientist. After spending several summers working in labs, I decided that I would be much happier working with people. Medical school was a great experience for me — I loved learning about the human body and definitely made the right decision.

I understand that visiting a gynecologist can cause anxiety and that my patients are frequently very nervous. My hope is that my office staff will make my patients feel comfortable and that the visit will be minimally stressful.

Growing up I dreamed of a career that combines science and human interaction. I found medicine to be the perfect combination that allows me to apply scientifically proven methods to impact patients' lives. My specialty addresses conditions that are not life threatening, but that negatively affect women's quality of life causing discomfort, distress and inability to perform or enjoy daily activities. I find gratitude in helping my patients feel better about themselves and see their quality of life improving. My best reward is when a patient tells me "you gave me my life back!"

My grandfather and great-grandfather were both doctors, and my mother was a professor of veterinary medicine, which exposed me to medicine from an early age. Some of my earliest memories involve helping my mother care for the many animals we had growing up. As I grew older, I became more and more interested in the science of medicine and decided to pursue a medical degree. I discovered my passion for women’s healthcare during my time at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, and this was further strengthened throughout my medical training.

One out of every four adult women has at least one pelvic floor disorder, and yet, many of my patients are surprised to discover that they are not alone. I feel privileged to have found a field where I can use my medical knowledge and technical skills to help each patient make the right decision for her individual situation and to improve her quality of life.

Dr. Lim was born in Thailand and immigrated to the US in the 1980s. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and spent 30 years in New York City. After attending medical school in Long Island, he completed his ob/gyn training in Brooklyn and worked in both private practice and academic roles for four years before pursuing a fellowship in gynecological oncology. After the fellowship, Dr. Lim joined WellSpan Health in the division of gyn oncology, where he currently serves as Division Chief.

When I was in first grade, my father told our family that he was dying. He wanted us to know why it was that he would be going to see doctors and nurses so much. He would be in and out of hospitals and explained that he wasn't sure how long he would live. I did not realize that our family's journey over the next 10 years would have such an influence on me, but it did. I am glad my father lived longer than expected and grateful for the many people who took care of him and us along the way. Wanting to care for patients and their loved ones who journey with them is why I became a doctor.

I enjoy meeting with patients to find and share answers for their health concerns related to pregnancy. It is rewarding to work with patients and their loved ones to develop and apply the most ideal care currently available for them and their developing children during pregnancy.

What I hope patients see and feel about me, as a physician and as a human being, is that I am devoted to their care and well-being. Though medical science cannot answer all the questions we sometimes have, we are fortunate to live in an age where new findings and answers appear literally every day. Together, my patients and I take advantage of the knowledge available to provide the best plan for delivering a healthy baby (or babies) to a healthy mom.

I grew up in southern York County and have lived here my entire life; apparently, I love it! I went to York College and began my career in a Pediatric Office prior to moving onto an Ob/Gyn Office. After being away from the office for a few years, my prior employer called and offered me a position with her here in the Residency Program.

Most of my adult life was spent working part-time and raising my three children who are all now married with children. Fortunately, life at WellSpan has allowed me to spend one day a week with those awesome grandkids while still working here with the residency program.
